What is Theater of the Oppressed?Theater of the Oppressed was born in Brazil in the 1970's. Originally, it was begun by Augusto Boal as newspaper theater, a way to use theater to engage with current local politics. It developed into a school of theater that allows people to take a critical look at the world around them and question oppression in their communities. It does this by engaging the participants in dialogues and critical reflections.
